Never thought there would come a day when I would die to get home so I could watch a game. Of cricket, no less. But I guess the ICC World Cup is as good a reason to change your cricket ideals as any. Or rather rediscover them. I've never called myself a sports-fan. But it struck me how i used to love watching cricket when I was a kid and my bro forced me to. Now that I needn't, I didn't.
So I thought, why not? And I got hooked on the fight to bring the World Cup back after 28 years. And what a fight it was indeed. Just loved watching each match, knockout-qualifier or not. I missed in all, about 2 matches that India played in.
After India tossed Australia around to a nail-biting end, I never had second thoughts. Then came the Pakistan-India match which India breezed through(seemingly, when you looked back after it was over). And then it came down to Sri Lanka. If it hadn't been India they'd been playing against, I would have rooted for Sri Lanka. I love their players, Malinga and Sangakkara. Malinga oozes power when he swings the ball. So the entire 6 hours of the match, I was on pins and needles . India's batting and Sri Lanka's bowling is formidable. But then when the time came, Sri Lanka's batting and India's bowling(surprise, surprise!) came well above the mark too.
Well, we all know who won. And crackers burst, rockets showered golden sparks in the sky, and the whole country stayed awake to watch the long awaited return of the Cup.
Yes, cricket is a religion in India.
And on 2nd April, 2011, our prayers were answered.
